So i know we all have been awaiting the arrival of a much happier, Holly Golightly spirited young lady to emerge from the pages. Tired of the boring drags of upstate ny. Ready for the hoorah of the great Lone Star. Well it is here and shining.
I got into Austin TX on monday. Met my roommate and i headed northeast to my humble abode. While the interiors are humble the full porch, amazing yard and wonderful location are not. The wonderful people that reside in this large oddly designed home are not humble, but in know way arrogant. genuine may be the way to give them credit.
The way that i could sum up why i feel so great besides the obvious is through one beautiful quote: " The most relaxing feeling of peace comes from the looks that people have on their faces, people offer a lot through their facial expression when they do not know that i am looking." Everyone, most everyone, in austin has a general friendlier demeanor than everybody, most everybody in albany ny. thank you austin for your warm welcome so far.
Monday 5 p.m. Las Casuelas Mexican Restaurant: Beef Liver Tacos. and a mexican beer. The beef liver had a dense texture, with cilantro and onions. I would have preferred this with beans and rice. Excellent other than that. amazing salsa! a wonderful first restaurant. Also the perfect thing to eat right before you get naked in front of room of people.
Monday 6 p.m. Sky Dancers: My first pack of unfiltered cigarettes that did not cost 8$. 100% natural and only 2.99$, they must be good for me!
Monday 6.30 p.m. Pump Project Art Complex: I had tried my hardest before I arrived to not be so worried about not knowing what I would be doing when I got down here. Employment wise I have such a vast array of talents and experience I was certain something would become. However, my over worry and thorough search left me with a gig the first night in town.
Through one of austins many culture and event websites I stumbled across the figure drawing class hosted by doug weber. I sent the man my information and he booked me so conveniently for monday night.
Now I am normally not very nervous, but the feelings of butterflies was not going away. When I arrived, I was welcomed, disrobed and put on my pedestal with much enthusiasm.
I have never felt as beautiful as I did, posing nude in font of room full of talented artists. I am very thrilled to get better acquainted with Pump Project and the artist that use their facilities.
Monday 10 p.m. Off to the Continental. Dale Watson was quite the party. Nothing like coming home to country with country. The first best part of this evening was the walk there. A huge plus to an already plus filled city was the river that is located so close to home. Tim and I walked down the path with a tasty bottle of wishing tree. Over the bridge we arrived.
After a few drinks we were blessed with the surprise guest John Popper from Blues Traveler.
After that, I danced some country with a young man on his way to nashville, then headed home.
Tuesday 2.30 a.m. Undisclosed Swimming Pool. It may be 30 out but I am skinny dipping. Can not wait until I am not freezing while I skinny dip at ungodly hours in prohibited pools of water.
Tuesday 12 p.m. Mr Naturals: Oh Jesus you have arrived. The best 7$ breakfast EVER! Do not take my word for it!
After we dropped off the motorcycle we headed over to sixth street. I am not that excited about the chance to get drunk on the main drag of a party town. However, I am thrilled at the chance at finding the really bad ass dives, digs, and dances. Play some pool. And get into the kind of trouble that books are written about.
Tuesday 3.30 p.m. Texas State Capitol. WOW!!! My mother and the woman that I sat next to on the plane both made me promise that I take the tour of the state capitol. I did. It was beautiful, inspiring and a great way to kick start the myth of Texas.
Tuesday 4 p.m. Public Transportation to the Strip. affordable rides with clean seats.
Tuesday 6 p.m. Spiderhouse for my mother. Austin being my mothers favorite city, she influenced a few key locations. First off being Spiderhouse. I ordered a Shiner Blonde in tribute to my shiner heritage, companied with the most life changing burrito ever..... the Frito Burrito.
Tuesday 7.30 p.m. H.E.B. The only thing that this place is lacking: half loaves of bread. And more single occupant household goods.
Wednesday 12 p.m. up and adam. Headed to find a part time job to support my dreams of finishing my book. The Hatbox. An adorable haberdashery where I was welcomed by Ted. Reminding me that Austinites are of a different breed and there is a lot they have to offer.
Wednesday 1.30 p.m. Hovercraft on South Congress. They just started carrying vintage; what seems to be affordable vintage. I was welcomed in by Ms. Jen who is working on her clothing line Belle Laide Couture. She had on one of dresses that makes me believe I am making the right decision about working with her. The next evening the store had a party that I was invited to, with a ping pong table and a keg how could I have said no.
Wednesday 10 p.m. Holy Mother of Texas, thank you for LoveJoys. Hallelujah to the establishment that allows people to indulge in their love of killing their lungs as well as drinking. The forty-fives were spinning and the thick haze through the room made everyone seem so attractive. J. Austin set the mood and started off my evening with perfect melodies. I hope they dont find me to be too much of an asshole, for you will see me there often.
Thursday 12 a.m. Plush and nobody there is blushing. Letting it loose on the dance floor. Wednesday night is Reggae Dub night. No shame, Tim and I put ourselves out there and, I hate to phrase it like this, but we got our boogy on. I met a very sweet young man, Jeremy. As well as the crazy grinding woman who invited us to her inauguration party.
Thursday and Hazy. Tim and I headed up to Pedal Pushers on Onion and Fifth. Scott with a very hidden, unique accent didnt have the tubes we needed. However, this will not stop me the least for considering this place adorable and they will till be my first stop for my bicycle needs.
This meant, unfortunately that we needed to head towards downtown. We needed to pick up Tims Rebel off fourth from where we had left it the night before. I do hate to have shopped there, but we very slowly dragged ourselves over to Mellow
Johnnys.
Now, I have to let you know the extent of my pain at this point. My legs were so sore. I have walked everywhere I have mentioned above. No bike, No bus. Just y concrete stompers. So this bitching couldnt stop and by that point I was starving.
Thursday 3.30 p.m. The Hut. I thought In and Out was burger god. holy fuck I had the Sink Burger. sub monterey jack. shared a thing of fries. Now this isnt the tiniest burger. I was understandably hungry. I ate the whole fucking thing. I dont think that you cant.
Thursday and the great debate. My nose was runny, my whole body hurt, my head was pounding and I was exhausted. However, I did have plans. I was invited to the party at Hovercraft. I was also invited to attend an art opening of Women and Their Work. So, when does adulthood set in. Probably Thursday night around six when I realize that I am sick and going out is the last responsible thing for my body. Sorry guys.
And not that sorry, I woke up after a fourteen hour beauty rest Friday afternoon at two. Putting my average get up time since I moved here around 1 p.m.
Friday though.
Friday 10.30 p.m. We make out and about to the great downtown. As we park I am privileged to experience the best scam I have come to witness. Towel Wavers. (i think this is an appropriate phrase) The homeless wave you in to a convenientlly found parking spot.
